Can you paint leather?

What kind of paint do i use? do I have to prime the leather/ treat the leather or do anything to condition the paint and leather from the elements? just a question, Theas? Detaru? I would have gone with oil base or acrylic, something not waterbased of course... but I'm not sure.

there are paints made for that , make sure the leather is not finished .
water based acrylic paints for use on natural veg-tanned tooling leather.

what I mean to say is that if the leather is finished, and I decide to snuff through it and do it anyway, will the paint hold to the leather and look good or will it chip and shit? cause that'd be... well... an unwanted result.
